Characteristics of technology

Objective:

  • Understand the implications of technology as intervention by design and how interventions have consequences, known and unknown, intended and unintended.

SUMMARY:
When you drop a stone into a pond, it creates water ripples – when technology is created and used it changes surrounding environments. The challenge is to look at products and services, and understand who they affect, and the environmental impacts that ripple out.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!

+ Gather information about a technology, and the environments it functions in.
+ Understand what had to be considered to develop and offer the technology in a marketplace -

  • What knowledge, machinery, equipment, and resources were used to create the technology?
  • What physical resources and non-material resources [such as software, money, etc] were used?

+ What relationships had to be formed and maintained between stakeholders to bring about the technology, and how did this affect the final product or service?
